Education

Giuseppe Pero is a neurologist who provides accurate medical advices regarding neuroradiological examinations.
Specifically, Giuseppe Pero deals with cerebrovascular diseases such as brain tumours, brain aneurysms, arterial venous fistulas, ischaemias and arterial venous malformations.

Prof. Pero is also specialized in cerebral vasculopathies, i.e. carotid arteries’ arteriosclerosis and nervous system’s diseases such as epilepsy, headaches, N.P.H and ALS.
Prof. Giuseppe Pero provides qualified advices also in psychiatric field. In particular, patients can obtain detailed diagnoses in case of depression, anxiety and neurosis.

Thanks to his expertise, Prof. Giuseppe Pero is able to treat cases of epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's and cerebral vasculopathies with innovative medical and pharmacological therapies.
In order to offer its customers a 360° service, Pero’s medical office is equipped with modern diagnostic equipment: electroencephalography, electromyography and evoked responses.

Neuroradiological examinations such as CT and MRI are carried out at the Centro diagnostica per immagini srl in Catania. What the medical office of the Sicilian town offers is an avant-garde service, the result of the competence and experience of Prof. Giuseppe Pero.
His dedication to the study of various neurological and psychiatric diseases let him deal with any type of problems in a serious and emphatic way.

Treatment of neurotic disorders

Dr. Pero offers his patients medical advices in neurotic disorders, depression and anxiety’s treatment through the combination of psychotherapy and drug therapy.
Neurosis is a class of functional mental disorders that causes the patient a disturbed relationship with others and the surrounding environment.

Depending on the different symptoms, neurosis can be defined as phobic, hysterical, anxious or obsessive. Neurotic disorders have a psychological cause and can be treated with psychotherapy and drugs, so as to reduce the most disabling symptoms.

Treatment of depression and anxiety

Dr. Giuseppe Pero offers his patients highly professional care and assistance in case of depression and anxiety.
Depression has been associated with chemical alterations in the brain such as the reduction of serotonin levels.
Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that mainly regulate sensory perception and body’s sleep-wake cycles.

The main symptoms of depression are: insomnia, hypersomnia, loss of appetite and body weight or, on the contrary, increased appetite and weight, apathy, anhedonia, loss of sexual desire, lack of energy, difficulty in concentrating and a tendency to isolate oneself from the family and society.

On the other hand, the psychological and character factors as well as the biological basis are responsible for the anxiety.
Anxiety is defined as an inadequate cognitive and emotional response to stress caused by more or less traumatic events in life.

This would result from an imbalance in the functioning of the noradrenergic, serotonergic and gabaergic systems, all formed by neurotransmitters. This imbalance would generate an incorrect response to stimuli that could prove dangerous.

Treatment of brain diseases

Prof. Giuseppe Pero, as neuropsychiatrist and neuroradiologist, deals with the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular diseases such as aneurysms, thrombosis and stenosis of the epiaortic trunks, arteriovenous malformations, vascularized brain tumors, cerebral vasculopathies and diseases of the nervous system.
Cerebrovascular diseases have a particularly high incidence with very often disabling consequences.

Dr. Giuseppe Pero deals with the diagnosis of each disease through the collection of the patient's recent and past medical history, an objective neurological examination and the validation of laboratory and instrumental tests.
Patients may have the following symptoms: visual, motor and emotional deficits, reduction of deep reflexes, headaches, dizziness, perception and memory disorders.

Cerebral vasculopathy is caused by the reduced blood’s flow to a certain area of the brain, as it happens during a heart attack.
Prof. Pero also deals with the treatment of nervous system diseases such as epilepsy and headaches: in epileptic patients, in fact, neurons tend to activate all simultaneously, generating what is called discharge, similar to the electrical one.

The diagnosis of epilepsy is based on a rigorous analysis of the patient's clinical history, on the collection of information and testimonies released by all those who witness the critical episodes, on the study of the electroencephalographic trace and of the magnetic resonance imaging.
This latter can show where the brain lesions responsible for the disease are located. The onset of headaches is linked to the presence of diseases of the intra- or extracranial structures that can determine the onset of this disease.

The disease arises from the slow loss of nerve cells in diffuse areas of the cerebral cortex. The disease begins to manifest itself many years before the onset of clinical symptoms. The causes are linked to genetic factors.
In Pero’s medical office, it is possible to diagnose Alzheimer's through neuropsychological and neuroradiological tests such as CT, brain magnetic resonance imaging and blood tests.

Electroencephalography and evoked potentials

Prof. Pero performs neurological examinations in Catania for the diagnosis of various diseases. Specifically, patients can be submitted to electroencephalography, also called EEG.

It is a test by which the electrical activity of the brain is measured by positioning some electrodes on the skull. The signal is recorded by special instruments and displayed as a trace, the electroencephalogram.

The doctor’s office also performs evoked potentials’ examinations, in order to control the integrity of both peripheral and central nerve conductions.
The most common evoked potentials’ types are: somatosensory, visual and auditory evoked potentials.

Somatosensory evoked potentials are mainly used to document sensory disorders that cannot be otherwise objectified; the auditory evoked potentials are useful for locating the acoustic nerves or the brainstem’s processes; the visual evoked potentials, finally, are used to diagnose acute or chronic inflammations of the optic nerve, symptomatic of ALS.

Electromyography

Dr. Pero’s medical office also performs an EMG tests.
Functional examinations are indicated for the diagnosis of neuropathies, i.e. nerves and muscles’ diseases and myopathies.
Electromiography consists of the administration of electrical stimuli to the patient through electrodes applied to the skin, above the nerves.

The examination allows to measure the speed of conduction of the stimuli conveyed.
In muscles’ study, the doctor can record the activity by inserting needles of various lengths in relaxed or contracted muscles.
Among the neurological examinations carried out in Catania, the EMG allows to diagnose, for example, diabetic polyneuropathy and ALS.

Dr. Pero’s medical office also performs clinical tests as supplementary means to the common diagnostic tools used in neurology (functional examinations and morphological examinations).
In particular, personalised psychodiagnostic courses are set up, both in clinical and expert fields.

Psychodiagnostic assessments include different components such as clinical interview information, medical evaluation ad observational data and informal tests and surveys.
After that, clinical data are integrated with each other in order to obtain a detailed and organic picture of the patient's situation and to formulate a functional and descriptive diagnosis.

Neuroradiological examinations

The medical office is specialized in neurological examinations and collaborates with Centro Diagnostica per Immagini srl, in order to allow its patients to undergo neuroradiological examinations such as CT and magnetic resonance imaging.

The CT, acronym for computerized axial tomography is a diagnostic technique that, through the use of ionizing radiation, allows to obtain a detailed image of a specific area of the body.

The CT scan may or may not involve the use of a contrast agent.
At the centre, patients can undergo brain scans with or without a contrast agent, while brain scans are performed with a contrast agent.
